One of the innovations in television of the late 1960s and early 1970s was the 'Wheel Series'... anthology series that revolved around a central theme, such as detective work, or medical work, and rotated a set of (often) four expanded 90 minute television series or story lines once a month. The Name of the Game started this trend, and it continued with The Bold Ones and then a new wheel series called 'Four in One.'
Four in One featured a drama about running an airport starring Lloyd Bridges, a medical drama, and a detective series about a law man in the city of New York who's roots are from out west. This series was called McCloud, and starred Dennis Weaver (or Gunsmoke fame) as the 'cowboy lawman in the big city.' The McCloud portion of the wheel became a hit, while the other three did not.
McCloud would go on to join the NBC Mystery Movie Wheel that would develop for the fall of 1971 and that wheel would become the most successful rotating anthology series of the 1970s. More on that this coming fall 2021.
In the meantime, we present to you McCloud, starring Dennis Weaver.
Enjoy.
