Op maandag 17 september zullen de belangrijke televisieprijzen worden uitgereikt in het Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles en het hele event wordt live uitgezonden door NBC. Gepresenteerd door Michael Che en Colin Jost van Saturday Night Live dat 21 nominaties kreeg.
Dit jaar is Netflix HBO voorbijgestreefd met het aantal nominaties. Zeventien jaar lang was HBO de absolute groot-grossier in het aantal nominaties, maar die titel gaat dit jaar naar de streamingdienst. Netflix heeft 112 nominaties te pakken, verleden jaar waren dat er 91. En HBO moet het doen met 108, tegenover 111 nominaties verleden jaar.
Maar HBO heeft met Game of Thrones wel de meeste nominaties te pakken, in totaal 22 stuks. Op de voet gevolgd door Westworld en Saturday Night Live met 21 nominaties. Een bijzondere nominatie was er voor Laurie Metcalf, zij kreeg die voor haar rol in de gecancelde serie Roseanne. Sandra Oh kreeg als eerste actrice van Aziatische afkomst een Emmy-nominatie voor haar rol in Killing Eve.
Modern Family kreeg verleden jaar helemaal geen Emmy’s, dit jaar zijn ze niet eens genomineerd. Onder de belangrijkste komediecategorie lijkt The Big Bang Theory de grote afwezige dit jaar, wel komt de komedieserie nog voor bij de technische Emmy nominaties dit jaar.
